The difference in one sentence

An astrocartography map is a geographic overview; a relocation chart is a place-specific horoscope. The map plots planetary angular lines across the world so you can see where each natal planet was rising, setting, culminating or anti-culminating. The relocated chart uses the same birth instant with a different geographic reference and shows the resulting Ascendant, Midheaven, houses and planetary placements for one location.

What stays the same in a relocation chart

The birth moment does not change. Planetary zodiac degrees and the aspects between planets therefore remain the same in the usual relocation calculation. What changes is the local frame: angles, house cusps and often the houses occupied by the planets. This is why a relocated chart should be read alongside the natal chart rather than presented as a replacement identity or a way to erase difficult natal themes.

What the astrocartography map shows

The map highlights paths where planets were close to four angles at birth. A Venus line is incomplete without its angle label because Venus on the MC frames a different question from Venus on the DC. The map is efficient for comparing broad regions, but visual closeness can be misleading. A careful report measures the distance from each selected city and states the method instead of treating every nearby-looking line as equally strong.

What the map does not show clearly

A world map cannot display every detail of a complete chart wheel at once. It does not make house cusps, house rulers or the full relationship between local angles and all planets easy to inspect. A relocated chart adds that city-level detail. Conversely, one relocated chart does not show where else in the world the same planet becomes angular. The two formats answer adjacent questions rather than competing for one correct result.

Which format should you start with?

Start with astrocartography when your question is broad: which regions deserve a closer look, or how do several cities differ at a glance? Start with a relocation chart when you already have one city and want to inspect its local angles and houses. For a move, a useful workflow is map first, city shortlist second, relocated chart third and practical research throughout. The chart should never outrank visas, housing, work, healthcare, safety or lived experience.

Why exact birth time matters to both

Both methods depend on the Earth’s rotation and the local horizon. A guessed time can move angular lines and change a relocated Ascendant or house structure while still producing polished output. If the time is missing, leave it unknown. Birth-time rectification is a separate specialist practice and should not be treated as a confirmed record. A narrower date-based tool is more honest than a precise-looking location analysis built on noon by default.
